THE SENTENCING OF ZAINAB SHERIFF IS A DARK DAY FOR SIERRA LEONE’S DEMOCRACY

Today, our nation has witnessed a staggering blow to the principles of justice and freedom of expression. The conviction and sentencing of Zainab Sheriff to four years in prison is not merely a legal verdict; it is a calculated attempt to silence a vibrant voice and intimidate anyone who dares to hold a different view of our country’s future.
As a law-abiding citizen, and a member of the opposition, I am deeply saddened by the message this sends to the youth and the women of Sierra Leone who look to people like Zainab as a symbol of courage. When the law is used as a hammer against political opponents, it ceases to be justice and becomes a tool of repression.
The Irony of Timing: It is particularly distressing, and frankly, an affront to our international partners, that this sentence was handed down while the International Moral Guarantors are on the ground in Freetown. Their presence was intended to foster peace and ensure the implementation of the Agreement for National Unity and the Tripartite Committee Recommendations.
By choosing this moment to imprison a prominent critic, the current administration has shown a blatant disregard for the spirit of reconciliation. You cannot talk about "Unity" with one hand while signing commitment papers and use the other hand to lock away those who disagree with you.
My Stand
To the Judiciary: I urge a swift and impartial review of this case. The eyes of the world, and more importantly the eyes of the Sierra Leonean people, are watching. Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done, free from political influence.
To the Moral Guarantors: I call on the representatives of ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Commonwealth to take note of this development. It is impossible to have a meaningful dialogue about national stability when the democratic space is being systematically dismantled.
To the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP): Sierra Leoneans demand fair treatment and the unbiased application of the law. Your institutions must exist to protect the democratic process and the safety of all citizens, not to act as extensions of the ruling party’s political agenda. Neutrality is your mandate; the people expect nothing less.
To Zainab Sheriff and her family: Stay strong. You are not alone in this struggle for a free and fair Sierra Leone.
We cannot build a prosperous nation on the foundations of bullying and fear. I remain committed to a Sierra Leone where every citizen, regardless of their political affiliation or social standing, can speak their truth without the threat of a prison cell.
