Over 60% of Sierra Leoneans live in extreme poverty today. The country remains among the world’s poorest countries, ranking 182nd out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index in 2020. Rampant corruption, income and economic inequality are the defining challenges we face as a nation. Decades of bad governance and 11 years of armed conflict had dramatic consequences on the economy.

 

Poverty is destroying our nation. Poverty is killing our people! 

 

As Dr. Richard Konteh is travelling around the country, listening to people share their experiences, it became clear to him how complex and deeply entrenched the poverty problem in Sierra Leone has become and how urgently an actual, actionable national development and poverty reduction plan is needed.

It’s not just about a lack of financial resources. It’s about not having the same opportunities as other people. It’s about feeling invisible, diminished and devalued by society. It’s about being forced to make impossible choices, like buying medicine or buying food. And if they have little food, who will eat first - the parent or the kids? It’s about the constant struggle that keeps people trapped, striving for a life that, too often, they can’t quite reach.

Whether it is people with disabilities, single mothers escaping violence, the chronically underemployed looking for more stability and security, or the thousands of others struggling with poverty, we've heard every day from people who have been left behind and are looking for better opportunities and better lives.

​

We need to do something new and bold to get our country back on track. We have to solve our challenges with bold, innovative ideas. Without these ideas and a real plan for progress, we cannot utilize our country’s capacity to help people when they need it most.

​

We are working to create a "Better Sierra Leone," a nation where every Sierra Leonean is better educated; live a healthy life in a healthy environment; prosper and have more money in their pockets or bank accounts; have equal opportunity to live a life of purpose and abundance; a nation where our natural resources benefit every citizen; a nation that will create sustainable jobs; a nation that will empower women and girls, youths and seniors, and invest in national unity and the private sector.

Our platform - "A Better Sierra Leone," has a strong focus on tackling systemic and institutionalized corruption, building solid and reliable institutions, building an educated, capable labour force, building national security, law and order, embarking on high-grade infrastructure investments, and bringing down unfair barriers that hold people back.

These actions are grounded in a belief that true prosperity and dignity for all is possible. We can afford to take care of each other in Sierra Leone. It’s ambitious. It isn’t easy. And it will take time. But together, we can make it happen. We can lift each other and break the cycle of poverty. We can build a better Sierra Leone for everyone.

Together, we can make real progress on national development poverty reduction and create a more socially inclusive nation. We can achieve these goals! We can make people’s lives better and create the opportunity to build a more prosperous future for themselves and their children. This is our commitment! ​
